Shahezi Fm

Period:
Cretaceous

Age Interval:
Early Cretaceous, (19) K1shz

Province:
Liaoning, Jilin

Type Locality and Naming

Songliao Basin. The Shahezi Formation was erected by Zhou Zhiyang (1962). The type locality is in Changtu of Liaoning. The reference section is down the borehole 98 and 226 in Yingcheng of Jilin.

Lithology and Thickness

The Shahezi Formation is a group of coal bearing strata, mostly of conglomerate, sandstone and shale. It is composed of off-white and black sandstones, siltstones and mudstones with intercalations of coal (usually thin-bedded), tuffaceous mudstones and acid tuffs.

Lithology Pattern:
Coarse-grained sandstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Conformably overlies the Huoshiling Fm

Upper contact

Disconformably overlain by the Yingcheng Fm

Regional extent

The formation is wide distributed in Jilin and Liaoning.

Fossils

It contains plant mega- and micro-fossils, conchostracans including Eosestheria, ostracods, the insect Ephemerospis trisetalis, species of the bivalve Arguniella, the fish Lycoptera, and the brackish-water Vesperopsis glabra (dominant), V. granulata and Australisphaera.

Age

" The presence of the Jehol Fauna (Eosestheria - Ephemeropsis - Lycoptera), together with Arguniella, in the Yixian Fm, Jiufotang Fm, and Shahezi Fm implies that these are chronologically very close, but the Yixian Fm and Shahezi Fm do not contain the trigoniodid bivalve Nippononaia, in particular the Barremian-Albian N. yanjiensis. Hence, the Shahezi Formation must be older than the Jiufotang Fm. Considering that it conformably overlies the Barremian Huoshiling Fm, it is interpreted to be mainly Barremian but may extend upwards into the Aptian." [modified quote from Kosenko et al., 2021]
